I think this is a Victorian work-up of an original sketch of Jane Austen, rather than an original piece, so the costume is probably that of the sitter who provided the body.
I cannot resist, in honor of the weird Jane Austen mashup (cf tenured radical, for those of you who haven’t been over there to see the spam whence this post title sprang), my favorite Austen quote: “There are few people whom I really love, and still fewer of whom I think well. The more I see of the world, the more am I dissatisfied with it; and every day confirms my belief of the inconsistency of all human characters, and of the little dependence that can be placed on the appearance of merit or sense.” If Austen had a blog, what a delight it would be to read. I would love to read her evisceration of the likes of Gingrich. Just imagine a world in which merit and sense were valued. Weird, indeed.
