I woke up at 4:30 this morning to an NPR news update claiming that a major snowstorm is hitting Eastern Colorado, with up to 2 feet of snow by the end of the day!!! Here’s what I observed: 2-3 inches of snow on the ground, most of which fell before bedtime last night, and some icy and snowpacked patches on the road. My commute to Baa Ram U. took an extra 10 minutes this morning. I am no daredevil–growing up in the Midwest plus my growing appreciation later in life for the laws of physics has made me a very cautious driver, particularly in snow or rain.
People sure are prone to weather-induced hysteria. This kind of hype used to be confined to the local teevee news channels, but I guess the Weather Channel has made it mainstream.

We’ve got quite a bit more than that! (I am giddy from the pleasure of the first snow day that doesn’t just mean more time to get all the rest of my work done!) Sure, it’s not snowpocalypse, but I’ll take it (a friend in the mountains has got 2 feet already).

I’m on my way to Steamboat in about 90 minutes–I should have known that we’ll never have a trip up there through Cameron Pass that’s not potentially treacherous. . .
And yet, Fort Collins still has barely more than a dusting at this point, so maybe it will be all just fine.

We’re in a window of clear and occasionally sunny weather. Quite a welcome relief in the middle of winter but you know you’re acclimated when -4C feels balmy!

You have to be wrong, Historiann. MSNBC is reporting a foot on the ground in Denver, two feet in the hills just above it, and probably double that by tomorrow morning. Storm “pummels” Colorado, it says. Maybe your yardstick was stopped by a garbage can embedded just below the surface in a crust-topped two foot drift? If I was dean of the on-line school, I’d cancel Saturday “classes,” just to be safe, and go with the always-popular “reporting two hours late” on Monday morning. Anyway, go carefully where you go.
